"James from Precise Electric was the perfect choice for my small job - two light fixtures removed in the kitchen and dining room and replaced with new fixtures plus medallions. He showed up the morning of the last big storm here, let me know he would he a little late due to that, and when he arrived had me tell him what I wanted, show him the fixtures and medallions, then brought his ladder, tools, drop cloth in, put his booties on over his work boots and got to work. Two hours to remove two fixtures, place the medallions - ended up installing three of those so the the kitchen lights would match - and taking a look at the hall lights I’m going to have him to replace next. Even took the box one fixture came in to dispose of! Polite, informative, careful with my belongings, has all his tools and knows what he’s doing with them. I am so happy with how the lighting looks in those two rooms now. His rates are competitive and he’s a great guy."

"I called Heritage because I am a new homeowner and my central A/C was blowing lukewarm air. I've seen the ads on TV for Heritage and online reviews looked good. I don't know any handymen, and I wanted someone I could trust. The Heritage rep was friendly and professional on the phone, and had a tech out to me in an hour. The tech called to let me know when he would be arriving, and he was on time. The tech, Mark, was friendly and professional, and knew his stuff. He explained things to me in an easy-to-understand fashion, and he presented me with all my repair options and the associated cost so I could make an informed decision. He was never pushy at all. He showed me exactly where the problems were, and explained what it would take to fix them. He had all the supplies he needed in his truck. He always put on shoe coverings before entering my home, so my carpets stayed clean. In the end, I decided it would be more cost effective to purchase a new central air conditioning unit, and Mark was able to quickly coordinate with the office to have a tech come out same day to discuss my options with me. This was my first time doing business with Heritage, and I am very impressed. I have signed up for their Home Advantage plan, which is basically like AAA, but for your house instead of your car. There is a low monthly cost, and I get free yearly cleanings of my furnace and A/C, 10% off all services, no emergency fees, and $500 off the install of a new furnace or A/C. I like having that peace of mind knowing professionals are helping to keep my home well-maintained. So far, I highly recommend Heritage!"

"Extremely knowledgeable both in his primary area of expertise (electrical) but also has some keen insights and advice on other home maintenance items as they relate to electrical installations. Definitely worth listening to and I will be hiring him again for additional work. His whole approach is "I do the work as if it was my own home". So, if you care about your home and having the work done right, then you can't ask for better than that."

"This was a home run for Cornerstone! Incredible service from start to finish! This was a complete Central AC install including installing all new ductwork. Andy & Britt were incredible. They were on time every day, and very personable. The job they did was great but I also appreciated how it looked. They took the time to tie up all the duct tubes so it was tidy and clean looking in the attic. This was a multi-day install, and there was constant communication on the schedule so I always knew when to expect them. The 2 electricians - Rick & Jeremy were the same. Very relatable and personable, on time and professional. They took care of the electrical install and also tidied up some other wiring. Front office was very professional and courteous, and consistently checking in on the job. Incredibly blown away by the amazing job the entire company did! I would recommend them 1000 times over! Great job to everyone!"

"Iâ ve written 850 detailed reviews on TripAdvisor, and Iâ m not an easy grader. Itâ s pretty rare that I share comments about service providers in social media, but I am more than happy to endorse Chamberlin Electric. This is a well run company with good people, great talent, and wonderful integrity. My experience stems from Chamberlin taking over a completely botched generator installation through Home Depot by another company that went belly-up. They were the complete opposite of Chamberlin -- never following through on commitments, not responding to voice or written communications, and doing such shoddy work that new customers could never be serviced. In contrast, Chamberlin has been polite, punctual, responsive, and professional. They employed best practices in installing my Generac that the previous company did not follow, perhaps leading to their problems. Iâ ve met the owner, Rick, a man who truly takes pride in his company and treats his customers with TLC (such as personal callbacks to troubleshoot issues). Iâ ve also dealt with three different electricians whoâ ve done good work, the outsourced gas technician who performed his role without a hitch, and of course Mandi and Doreen by phone who are a pleasure. They manage the office and backend operations, keep communications flowing smoothly, and keep the customer on top. To me, theyâ ve done a great job on the front line, keeping folks to schedule, responding promptly to my needs, and making my life easy -- like processing paperwork for rebates. In sum, Chamberlin is a quality company that knows its trade inside and out and earns the respect of its customer base. Five stars."

"We hired Pedro Cruz to replace electric baseboard radiators that had rusted due to moisture. He was prompt, professional, courteous and friendly. He replaced both radiators in less than an hour and his rate (to include both radiators) was, in our estimation, extremely reasonable. We would not hesitate to hire Pedro for any other electrical issues we could have in the future. We would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a dependable electrician."

Frequently asked questions

  • An electrician’s cost per hour comes in between $50 and $100. It’ll vary depending on your location and the type or professional you hire. Areas with a higher cost of living can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale. Licensing level may also increase the price.
  • Usually you’ll pay a higher rate for the first hour. This covers their travel and time expense. Emergency or after-hours rates are usually higher too – expect to pay an emergency fee of up to $300 plus a higher hourly rate.

Electricians do a fair amount of larger remodeling and new construction projects but also common residential projects including:

For cost information related to the above tasks, visit our Electrical Cost Guide.

  1. Do you have a license to perform electrical work in this state?
All states require an electrical license or work performed under a Master Electrician. You should also ask how many on the job hours of experience they have.
  2. Do you have insurance?
Never use one who isn’t insured. You can ask to see proof of insurance.
  3. Do you have prior work references?
You might skip this for small jobs like installing a light or outlet. For larger projects, always get references.
  4. What are your rates?
Always ask up front. Getting a detailed quote up front is the best way to go.
  5. Who is going to do the actual work?
Often, a Master Electrician will come out to diagnose and bid on projects, but they have their apprentice and journeyman electricians do the work. This isn’t a terrible thing, in fact it’s common practice. The Master’s license is on the line with any work he supervises.
  6. Is your work warrantied or guaranteed?
Any reputable company or contractor warranties their work, usually for at least a year.
  7. Are you usually on time?
Overbooking is a frequent problem with electrical work. Often, a service call goes long, and they end up showing up at your home late. This common complaint is easily remedied with an up-front and honest discussion. If they can’t be on time, make sure they’ll call.

1. Don’t Be Misled by an Electrician’s Hourly Rates

A truly skilled, well-equipped professional with a truck full of parts that charges $100 an hour can be a much wiser choice than an inexperienced hack, working with inadequate tools and no parts, but charging much less. Often, more experienced professionals get the job done quickly with warrantied work.

2. Compare Travel Charges

Rates reflect travel times. Travel charges can have a big impact on your costs and are in some ways easier to compare than hourly rates. Many electricians spend a third or more of their time navigating traffic on their way to a jobsite. Every contractor must find a way to pay for the expense of driving each day.

3. Bundle Repair Jobs Together

When you feel it’s time to call a pro, review your list and then conduct a mini-inspection of your home. Look for faulty switches and dysfunctional or crowded outlets. When the electrician comes, you’ll save money and time by getting everything taken care of at once.

4. How to Prepare & What to Know Before the Electrician Arrives
  • Be as thorough and detailed in describing your needs to your contractor. The more they know, the quicker the job will go.
  • Before they arrive, prepare a precise list of items you want serviced. Electricians have budgeted their time for a service call. They don’t have time for additional requests once they are on site.
  • Make sure the electrical panel box is accessible. You’ll pay for the time it takes to access it.
  • Clear away fragile items, knickknacks and furniture from areas where you expect the them to work.
  • If you have questions about the project, ask them before they start. Most are happy to run you through the problem and the process of fixing it.
  • Ask about potential issues after the work is complete. During a service call a professional will spot any potential hazards.
  • You’ll lose power to parts of your home while they work. Be prepared to pause anything you’re doing during the service call.
  • In most cases you’ll have the option to either pay at the time of service or have a bill sent to you. You’ll be able to pay with cash, credit and sometimes check.
5. Install Money-Saving Electrical Fixtures
  • By switching from ordinary incandescent light fixtures or bulbs to fluorescent or LED ones, you can substantially reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Motion detector switches can help you save money on outdoor lighting while at the same time providing very cost-effective security to your home.
  • Creative landscape lighting and indoor accent lighting can make your home more appealing to you, your guests and potential buyers in the future.
